We also keep de-icing salt off new decorative concrete for the first full winter. Sand for traction is fine. Rock salt on a slab that has not fully cured is the fastest way to ruin a surface you just paid for.

The two things that damage stamped concrete here are de-icing salt and skipped sealing. Keep salt off it — sand for traction instead — and keep it sealed, and a stamped patio will outlast the wood deck it replaced.

Resealing is a straightforward job — clean the surface, let it dry, roll or spray the sealer. It is the one maintenance item that comes with choosing stamped concrete, and it is the difference between a patio that still looks new at year ten and one that looks tired at year five.

Not directly — stamping requires fresh concrete. What can be done on a sound existing slab is a stamped or textured overlay, a thin cementitious topping that is textured and coloured. Overlays look good but are less forgiving in a freeze-thaw climate than a proper new pour, and they depend entirely on the condition of the slab underneath.
