A retaining wall has one job: to hold back soil that wants to slide downhill. In Erie County that soil is heavy, wet clay for much of the year and frozen solid for the rest. Saturated soil behind a wall with nowhere to drain pushes far harder than dry soil, and when that water freezes it pushes harder again. Footing, Drainage, and Frost
Every wall starts below grade. We dig out and compact a base sized to the wall's height and set it deep enough that frost cannot lift it. Behind the wall goes free-draining stone and a perforated drain pipe that carries water out to daylight, so water never gets the chance to build up pressure against the back of the wall. Leave the drainage out and even a well-built wall starts to lean within a few winters.
We also look at where the water is coming from in the first place. Downspouts, a driveway, or a neighbour's yard draining toward the top of the wall all get dealt with at the estimate, because a wall is only as good as the water management around it.
Height, Permits, and Engineering
Short landscape walls are straightforward. Taller walls, walls that hold up a driveway or a structure, and walls near a property line are different: many towns and villages require a permit, and walls over roughly four feet generally need a design from an engineer. We will tell you at the estimate which category your wall falls into, and help coordinate the paperwork if it needs any.
